Hinoemata Kabuki YARUBEYA

桧枝岐歌舞伎 やるべえや

Japan/76min./2011

やるべぇやIn a small village deep in the mountains of Fukushima, there’s a Kabuki tradition called Hinoemata, which lasted for 260 years. To preserve the tradition, the younger generation learns how to perform. It’s not difficult to copy the movements, but the disciplines inherited from the older generations is hard to grasp for the junior high school students who took on the challenge. As training and practice ensue with difficulties, the students eventually learn much more than the movements; spiritual disciplines and teachings of ancient Japan which was carried on from generation to generation. The film climaxes in a moving ending. Abiko’s documentary feature film debut finished shooting in Fukushima right before the disaster struck. The crew sincerely hopes for the swift recovery.
